I have a plan that isn’t just a band-aid, it’s a simple fix that helps everyone by bringing people out of poverty through education. The plan is to help high school graduates, young parents, and adults living in poverty get the post-secondary education they need to succeed.

As someone who couldn’t afford a post-secondary education out of high school I learnt this first-hand. This one thing can bring people out of poverty because it provides them with an education, training, skills, and confidence.
Post-secondary application fees are over $100, that’s money better spent on survival, feeding their family who is struggling to get food on their plates. Providing this funding opens opportunities to grants and loans for an education that can lead to a life-changing prosperous career.
the plan
The importance of an education is emphasized in the UNESCO news article, “World Poverty Could Be Cut in Half if All Adults Completed Secondary Education“. Although the statistics and information are based on third world countries I believe this applies everywhere. As a grassroots person I’m beginning here in Ottawa and hope to eventually reach even more people in need. The plan:
Phase 1:
- Find a non-profit to work with, accept, and distribute funds;
- Identify school(s) and area(s) to begin supporting;
- Do presentations to those identified grade 11 and 12 students on the opportunities of post-secondary education and let them know of the funding support;
- Distribute funds to support the secondary school areas of greatest need in Ottawa.
Phase 2:
- Expand the funding to the next areas of greatest need;
- Expand the presentations to grade 9 and 10 students planting seeds on the value and benefits of a post-secondary education as well as funding support available.
Phase 3:
- Fully fund the entire Ottawa area secondary schools;
- Create primary school presentations planting seeds for post-secondary education and their opportunities.
Phase 4:
- Connect with non-profits, organizations, school boards, physicians, and hospitals, helping young parents get a post-secondary education.
Phase 5:
- Expand on Phase 4 to all adults.
Phase 6:
- Expand Phases 1 to 5 to other areas and groups that were not identified previously.
current funding
If you’re looking for current funding or application information, a great resource is the Government of Ontario webpage, Go to college or university in Ontario. Here you’ll find everything education related in Ontario including loans, grants, and scholarships.
giving back
Unfortunately, access to loans, grants, and scholarships are only available after you apply. You need to pay the post-secondary application fee and this is where middleagedteen comes in.
My favourite song, Imagine, by John Lennon, has inspired me for so much, including imagining a world without poverty. Helping those in poverty helps us all, from the cost of our social services to the staffing shortages due to our aging population.
I have a plan and the way you can help is by sharing and following me on my social media to get the latest notifications of my posts. If you have any comments, I’d love to hear them on my social media too. Here’s to imagining and creating a better world for everyone!
Cheers,
